Websites and IP address have DNS counterparts. These DNS counterparts are the physical location of the websites on the Internet. However, these actual locations are blocked off from regular access. The only way to find out what the names of these DNS counterparts are is by performing what is known as a reverse lookup. This can be accomplished via the command line in DOS.

Instructions

  • 1. Open the "Start" menu. If using Windows XP or earlier, click "Run" on the menu that appears.

  • 2. Type "command" into the program box and press "Enter." This opens up a command line prompt.

  • 3. Type "nslookup" followed by the website or IP address you want to trace into the prompt, then press "Enter" to see the results. The first set that appears represents your server and IP address and should be disregarded.

  • 4. Read the second response from the two responses that appear. If you used an IP address, your answer is next to the "Name" section. If you used a domain name, your answer is in the "Address" section.

  • 5. Type "Exit" and press "Enter" to exit the command prompt.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some websites cannot be looked up.
